Autumn 1 in Reception

This half term our topic has been ‘Ourselves’. We have spent time talking about our families and our pets, where we live, the things we like doing and we have been learning about our bodies and how to stay healthy. We painted self-portraits and made a display for the classrooms out of pictures of ourselves.

At the end of the first half term the children in Reception enjoyed a morning of activities linked to the celebration of Harvest, and to the season of autumn.  Parents were invited in to join their children to explore the indoor and outdoor environments, and the wide range of different activities on offer.

It was fantastic to see so many parents attend the session, and sharing in the learning experiences with the children.  Everyone had a fantastic morning!

Diwali in Reception

As part of our ‘Celebration’ topic, we have been learning about Diwali; the Hindu Festival of Light.

We started the week with a workshop with Miss Helen where we learnt lots of new dance moves and told the story of Rama and Sita, Ravana the ten headed demon and Hanuman the monkey king! We all enjoyed trying on and dancing in some traditional clothes.

In the classroom, we have designed our own Mehndi’s, lanterns, Rangoli patterns, shadow puppets and Diva lamps.

We have looked at Diwali information books, read stories and watched videos to find out more information.

Summer 1 in Reception

This half term our topic has been ‘Animals’.  We have been learning about different types of animals and their habitats.  We have talked about how to care for animals and some of the children have been sharing photographs of their own pets with the class.  We had a visit from some guinea pigs and also a more unusual pet, a pigmy hedgehog.  We spent time painting and drawing animals, and even used junk model materials to make our own animals. To end our topic we went on a trip to Banham Zoo where we had a great day looking at and finding out about all of the different animals that live there.

Spring 2 in Reception

This half term our topic has been ‘People Who Help Us’. We have been very lucky and have had lots of visitors coming into school to help us learn more about the different jobs that people do to help us. We met paramedics and doctors, fire fighters, and police officers. We all had a great time looking at the emergency vehicles, and trying on the police jackets and hats. We talked a lot about what we would like to be when we grow up, and we learned about the jobs that people in our families do.

Chinese New Year

We have been learning about the celebration of Chinese New Year. We began by finding out about the Chinese zodiac and the story of Emperor Jade the animal race. We found out that 2017 is the year of the rooster.

We found out about how people celebrate Chinese New Year. We learnt that they get ready by cleaning their homes, decorating and preparing special food. Children are given money in lucky red envelopes and families go to watch parades and firework displays.

At the end of the week we had a visit from Miss Gina from Music and Movement. She led a Chinese New Year dance workshop where the children experienced Chinese music, tried using chopsticks and also used the dragon and lion puppets that would typically be seen at new year celebrations.

Spring 1 in Reception

This half term our topic has been ‘Fantasy’.  We have enjoyed creating our own fantasy characters and started the topic with a dressing up day where we all came to school dressed as our favourite character.  We have been busy reading lots of stories, and have had visits from fairies, witches and pirates!  We have explored potion mixing and making treasure maps, and we have been using our imaginations to write lots of our own stories.

Autumn 2 in Reception

This half term our topic has been ‘Celebrations’.  We have been learning about how and why we celebrate different occasions, and we have talked about celebrating birthdays, Christmas and also the celebration of Diwali.

During our week on Diwali we had a visit from Miss Gina from Music and Movement who led a Bollywood dancing workshop for us.  Back in the classroom we made our own diva lamps and rangoli patterns.

When learning about our birthdays we talked about the months of the year and learnt which month all of our birthdays are in.

We enjoyed decorating our classrooms when we started learning about the celebration of Christmas.  We listened to the Nativity story and did lots of Christmas crafts.
